Bangkok Canals

The memorable appearance and inimitable atmosphere of Bangkok owes itself, in part at least, to the Chao Phraya River and its numerous canals. The river emerges in the mountains in the northern part of the country and carries a dark-yellow stream through the capital, onwards into Siam Bay. The canals meanwhile, wind through the seething mass of the metropolis as transport routes. The picturesque khlongs, as they are known by the Thais, have since long become some of Bangkok’s main symbols and are worthy of the same attention that is given to the royal palaces, elegant Buddhist temples, unusual museums and loud markets.

The Chao Phraya River, is the powerhouse of the entire city of Bangkok and is Thailand’s main water artery. In the late 18th century, when the Burmese destroyed the former capital of Siam, Ayutthaya, the King Rama I, placed a new capital downstream in the bend of the river. This region, Thonburi, now forms a part of Bangkok. Canals appeared there before the roads did, primarily because the new capital was built according to the image and style of the former one, where khlongs had played the role of the main transport arteries and served as streets. Thousands of boats glided over their waters and due to this branched network of canals, Bangkok was known as the Oriental Venice for a many years.

During the last century however, the city lost this nicknames as the capital started to grow rapidly and develop chaotically, with most of khlongs filled in and turned into regular streets since that time. However, the canals that have been preserved still play an important role in city’s transport system. They are also very valuable to Bangkok’s guests, for whom a boat trip through the watery passages represents the best way to feel city’s true atmosphere and to see how the more humble Thais live.

The cheapest way to achieve this experience is by taking the river bus that runs along both the Chao Phraya River and the khlongs: drifting past slow-moving barges and boats carrying rice, while examining ancient monasteries and simple wooden huts, behind which one can see the intimidating modern skyscrapers – buildings of offices and banks, shopping malls and luxury hotels. Moreover, the river buses are the fastest and the most comfortable way of traveling through the city, with the added bonus of seeing Bangkok and its many contrasts from the water. Getting anywhere by water transport is much more convenient than standing for hours in the legendary traffic jams of Thailand’s capital, while the river breeze gives a comforting coolness on hot and humid days.

Another way to explore Bangkok’s water routes is to rent a popular local boat, the reua hang yao. Unlike the river buses, these narrow and long boats with their benches and canopies can navigate easily, not only through the Chao Phraya River, but also through narrow khlongs, leading to the original city quarters that still stand on the water.

In addition to these options, guests can always travel through the capital’s canals with help from the river taxis, on special Khlong Tours, or - if they fancy pushing the boat out - on a river cruise.
